Big Project #1 - Line, Color + Photo

Starting Photo Frames

  • Can be any size, but should be consistently sized across all frames

  • Will not be part of the final image, but will be submitted as either a single image(below), or 6 rough screenshots

  • If working with tracing, should be printed large enough for the subject to take up most of an 8.5 x 11 page

Line Drawings

  • Each done on a separate piece of tracing paper, with consistent sizing

  • Should be line drawings mostly - no shading or color applied

  • Can be exact or more abstract - can be traced or referenced, or a combo of both

  • Each drawing will be photographed separately and submitted

Layering

  • During the in class review, you will experiment with a few different compositions - this will be part of your in-class review of the projects.

  • Photograph each composition to submit to Canvas.

Color Addition

  • You will have a color layer or layers that correspond to each of the 6 line drawings.

  • You may use any medium to produce the color - it can be acrylic paint, watercolor, colored pencil, pastel or marker, color paper or even color layers printed digitally.

  • The color layers can be completed using 1 of 2 format options:

Color Format Option 1:

Color can be applied to 6 individual pieces of paper, so that each color layer can be placed under the corresponding drawing layer. If you are doing this, you might want to either apply the color to tracing paper OR cut your color layers down so it is easier to overlap the different drawings with their corresponding colors.

Color Format Option 2:

Color layers can be applied to a single piece of larger paper or a few pieces taped together, and correspond to one composition of all six drawings.

ADDITIONAL Digital Requirements

  • No autotrace, filters or automatic image trace processes are allowed to be used - drawings AND color must be produced “by hand”, either by mouse or tablet using the drawing, brush or shape tools, and the original video frames cannot be a part of your final project.

  • Digital work files must be submitted to Canvas

Printing Option 1:
Same as analog requirements (Drawings on tracing paper or transparency, 1 of 2 color format options)

Printing Option 2:
If the drawing layers cannot be printed on transparency film or tracing paper

6 separate drawings (no color) on 6 pieces of normal 8.5 x 11 paper

3 different compositions - Direct Overlay, Horizontal Composition, Choice Composition - of ALL the drawings and color layers on a single page (8.5 x 11 to 11 x 17) with an added background color or colors. All color options are your choice
