Module 1 Studio Projects: Working with Pixel-Based Image Editors
This Module 1 Project-Set introduces common processes and techniques utilized when working with Pixel-Based Image Editors such as Photoshop, GIMP + Snapseed. These skills are important when producing time-based media and artworks, because they can be used to edit digital photos in ways that explore and emphasize time, progression and/or motion. These techniques and methods are also similar to many of the processes utilized by digital video and animation editors, which we will be using extensively starting next week.
In order to get some practice with these processes, you will be working with images that you take specifically for this project. These images should ALL be taken from within your home. Since many of us are dealing with shelter-in-place and social-distancing orders, the focus of these photos should be on using your home or workspace as a setting for activities and events that would not usually happen at-home. These can include road-trips and vacations, outdoor / sporting activities, and typical social events such as going to the movies, a restaurant or a show. When taking photos, think about common photographic conventions you would use if participating in these events and activities in their normal settings. Be creative with this content requirement and have fun, but don’t worry if you are feeling a little stuck or challenged - this component is only worth 1 out of 6 points total.
Be sure to review the Project Description and requirements posted in Canvas - the information in Canvas is the most up-to-date. In some instances, what I say in the videos might be slightly different (and I’ll be sure to try to note when this is the case).
Once you have taken enough photos in your home that meet the content requirements for this project, begin with the steps and processes presented in the tutorials below. Remember, you are not required to use the same program utilized in these tutorials, and you can use multiple apps or programs to complete these projects - you just need to use a pixel-based image editor to create 4 different submission images that each correspond to a specific image-editing process.
Intro to Open, Save, New File Processes
Process 1 - Image Adjustments + a Split Image
Use a polygonal selection to roughly separate a mostly symmetrical image into 2 parts. Apply at least 3 image adjustments to 1 half of the image, leaving the other part un-edited. Try to match a filter or preset you use in Instagram, VSCO or another photo-editing app.
Process 2 - Working with Layers and Blending Modes
Optional Video for Troubleshooting + FAQ below
Combine 2 different images using layers and blending modes. Try to work with related images but different subjects, such as a landscape or environmental photo and a selfie. Utilize image adjustments and processes as needed.
Process 3 - Image Collage
Choose at least 4 different photos to combine into a single image. This image should communicate a sense of time, progress, motion, action or linear narrative.
Process 4 - Time-lapse / Stop-Motion / Motion Experimentation
Explore the connection between motion and still-images using an in-camera “live-photo”, “boomerang” or time-lapse function, or an equivalent app or program. These can be very straightforward, or more experimental. Upload a short video (.mov or .mp4 formats preferred), and animated GIF, or some other web-ready format. (If the app is made to post to social media, it should work).
