Studio Project 4 - Vector Character Designs

Introduction

This project is relatively free-form compared to Studio Project 3. You will be developing 2 character designs using Adobe Illustrator / vector graphics. These will be based on your Project 1 concept sketches, and/or your Project 2 Pixel-Art Style assets. They can look very similar to the Project 2 assets, but should be in a different style, as vectors are not ideal for creating pixel art and allow for many other visual options.

Character designs should be created in a workspace or artboard where they are at least 320x640 or 640x640 size {10x the size of the pixel-art assets from Project 2}. This recommendation is because, while vector graphics can be scaled infinitely, it can prove difficult to work with some of the vector tools at a very small scale {such as 32x32 pixels}.

These designs should also work at a scale that they visually “read” in the environment designs made for Project 3 using the placeholders, and not rely on details that are not visible in their “in-game” scale.

The videos below are older, and are in the process of being updated. As I update these, the overall content / instructions will remain the same, however, if I mention “extra credit” or requirements that are not noted in this text or in Canvas, it is because this project has shifted quite a bit since I first recorded them. Always go with what is in Canvas, v.s. what I might say in a video, when it comes to requirements, points, credit, etc.

CREATING CHARACTER ASSETS IN ILLUSTRATOR / VECTORS

Also, a few reminders of your options with this video format:

  1. Pop out of Canvas and watch in a new tab if any of the features aren't working

  2. There are fullscreen and CC (Sub-title) options available in the right hand corner. For being YouTube auto-captions, these are pretty clear. I think they must have improved their algorithm. Please email me with any accessibility needs.

  3. If you are feeling pressed for time, but don't want to miss anything, you can watch with audio in 1.5 speed by hitting that little gear icon.
