REMIX ROOTS - COLLAGE + DADAISM

Dadaism - Art Movement that originated in Europe in 1920s in direct response to World War 1

  • First Industrial War - Machine guns, chemical warfare, tanks, bombs

  • First war documented with photography + with info and images distributed via a mass media system (newspapers)

  • High numbers of civilian casualties + destruction to cities and towns

Dadaism grew out of the social "rejection" of war as a product of "civilization" + "culture"

“Dada wished to replace the logical nonsense of the men of today with an illogical nonsense,” - Gabrielle Buffet-Picabia

“The beginnings of Dada…were not the beginnings of art, but of disgust.”
-Tristan Tzara.

Dada-ist collage

  • Working with objects of mass media and industrialization - advertisements, photographs, newspapers, everyday object (readymades), typographic symbols and phrases

  • Artists cut apart these images / object, then re-assembled

  • New works created new meanings, but also retained some of the meaning of the original materials

  • Very process is about breakage + re-creation
