CT 10 - UNDERSTANDING DIGITAL DESIGN

Project 2 Studio Videos Color + Texture Forms

Part 1 - Getting Started in Photoshop

Make sure to select your “creative-technology-object”, your starting reference image, your new color scheme and your new set of textures BEFORE starting this project in Photoshop. The above are all intentional choices you get to make as the artist / designer. For more information on these choices, see the slides from the Week 3 Thursday {10/17} class meeting in Canvas.

Creating a Color Scheme in Photoshop

This is optional - if you use a color scheme generator or app, you can download or screenshot your color scheme and include it as a reference layer in your project Photoshop file.

Part 2 - Working with Color in Photoshop

The videos in this section suggest one way of approaching the first design, which is creating a graphic, based on a photograph, that is only defined by areas or layers of color. There are other ways to approach this part of the project, and there are different ways this can look - don’t feel tied to these visuals or this one process alone.

Creating Color Forms + Layers

Organizing Color Layers Using Folders - Optional but HIGHLY Suggested

Part 3 - Working with Texture in Photoshop

If following this approach, it is suggested to complete the color layers / Design 1 before working with texture and starting Design 2. Continue to use the same Photoshop file - the work completed for the color forms can be used to help make working with texture easier.

Adjusting Textures

This video covers reasons for working with color vs black and white textures, and ways to adjust both for Design 2 and also with Design 3 in mind.

Part 4 - Possibilities for Combining Texture + Color and Exporting

The 3rd required design, the combination of color and texture, can be done mostly by adjusting the blending modes of the existing color and texture layers. There are other ways to do this that would be equally successful, so, do not feel bound by this approach and process. The videos below go over optional explorations - project do not need to include these, and they also are not limited by these options.
