PROJECT INSPIRATION + RESOURCE PAGE FOR EXERCISE 7.1

Exercise 7.1 inspiration page

Check out the re-creations and the re-mixes below for ideas and inspiration for this project. Watching 15 - 20 uninterrupted minutes of Empire Uncut, below, is a great place to start when it comes to seeing how different artists and filmmakers apply their own unique style to the same source material. While this film is a re-creation that works within the original film's time limits, this can be a good way to understand different, effective strategies for visually communicating elements of a known-story with more limited resources.

EDITING + MONTAGE EXAMPLES

I have also included a few links to videos, films, and montages that work with time and editing in interesting and effective ways. When watching these montages, consider how much information can be communicated in just a second to a half second, especially when working with narratives that are already well-known by not only their story, but also their visuals. Think back to iconic scenes from recent films you have watched - and how these visuals - or in this project's case, similar visuals - could be used to tell a story even when separated from the rest of the film. While these montages are all cutting together scenes and action from different, original feature films, they are still excellent examples of how editing can help film communicate a lot of information in a very short amount of time.

The scenes edited together in the montage below show two different techniques that could be useful for this project: the montage editing style, as well as some examples of visually striking shots from a collection of different well-known films. Think about what makes these shots so memorable - is it color? The composition / framing? (How the frame is composed, where the subjects are in the frame, how close or far the subjects are from the camera)? The action? Or a combination of these different elements? If you are creating unique visuals for your project, this can be a great motnage to watch for different types of framing and shots.

Finally, the trailer below is for a full length feature film made entirely of clips of other films...so, a bit like the inverse to this project, but still a useful example of meaning-making with editing and montage. Full film at the bottom. (You aren't required to watch the whole thing, I just wanted to post in case anyone was interested).
