MODULE 2: STUDIO TUTORIALS 2.1 - 2.4
Intro - Working with Texture + Collage in Digital Environments
TUTORIAL 2.1 - Working with a guide layerS to Develop TExtures
In this video, I apply a Black and White adjustment and then adjust the levels slightly, before applying the “Crystallize” filter (Filter > Pixelate > Crystallize...)
You are not required to make your original portraits black and white, nor do you need to adjust the levels or the contrast before applying whatever Pixelate Filter you choose - I only did this to make the the addition of color more obvious for the tutorials down the line.

If your image has more subtle tone differences once you apply the filter (and less contrast), it will still work work perfectly for the goal of the exercise - you will simply need to turn down the “tolerance” on the Magic Wand Tool, and it will be more precise in differentiating the areas it selects. To do this, once you have selected the Magic Wand Tool, go up to that top info bar (below the main menus) and input a 5 into the “Tolerance” field (the default is set to 25). If this is still not precise enough, you can go lower.
Tutorial 2.2 - Importing Textures
Tutorials for 2.3 + 2.4 - Collage
Make sure to read the directions and different requirements for 2.3 and 2.4. The following videos demonstrate the processes required to complete both assignments, however, each assignment asks for slightly different visual input and output. If you only follow along with the videos, you will not know the full requirements of both assignments.
1. New Documents, Selecting and Pasting
2. Transforming + EDiting Layers
3. Working with color
Also, a few reminders of your options with this video format:
Pop out of Canvas and watch in a new tab if any of the features aren't working
There are fullscreen and CC (Sub-title) options available in the right hand corner. For being YouTube auto-captions, these are pretty clear. I think they must have improved their algorithm. Please email me with any accessibility needs.
If you are feeling pressed for time, but don't want to miss anything, you can watch with audio in 1.5 speed by hitting that little gear icon.
